It's nearly impossible to describe Mary's impact on our family. We met when we were part of a group of summer host families for students visiting from Italy. Mary, Jack and Eileen kindly invited our student to their home so he could meet other young people.
Later, when I was desperately seeking after-school care for our two children, I called Mary for suggestions. She surprised me by asking if she could do it, and I was speechless! This mother of seven, experienced school teacher, community volunteer and role model for impeccable values...could we have been more blessed than to have Mary watching over our children?
Mary led our children on outings to historical sites, taught them yarn crafts, and brought them educational games from her teaching inventory. Most importantly, our children learned the important life lesson that caring for others requires dependability and "showing up." Every day, without fail, Mary was at the bus stop or car line long before arrival time, waiting to greet our children and help them feel secure and cared for.
Mary and Jack attended our most important family milestones, lighting a candle at our son's bar mitzvah celebration as a reflection of Mary's positive impact on his upbringing. I often referred to Mary as "the other grandmother," and she laughingly agreed.
There is so much more I could say; another indication that Mary's life was overflowing with devotion...to faith, family, friends and community. We miss her.

We were so sorry to hear that Aunt Mary had passed.
For decades, Aunt Mary and my Dad spoke every Saturday - maintaining that bond was something that was important to them. We enjoyed our visits with Aunt Mary... attached are pictures of her 80th birthday party at the Jersey Shore, her visit to celebrate my Dad's 85th birthday in Rhode Island, having dinner together in New Jersey the evening before Uncle Jack's 90th birthday celebration, and finally, my last visit with Aunt Mary in Bloomfield this past fall.
All great memories together. May she rest in peace and may her family find strength in all the wonderful memories together,
Love, Gail & Tim Boyce

If her children are a reflection of their mother, which is inevitably true, then it is apparent that she was kind, full of humor, intelligent, inquisitive, adventurous and loving. We wish we had known her better, but feel blessed that she raised amazing children that we can call friends.

My favorite memories of my Aunt Mary and Godmother were the conversations she had with our dad when that was still possible. I would often hear about these reminiscences, updates and family stories from each of them. It was clear that these calls meant a lot to them as they had decades of shared history and were each others only siblings. Clear to me was the abiding love and appreciation they had for each other. I send my love and support to Uncle Jack and my Anderson cousins and their families.
I'm pretty sure there is a card game going on in heaven. It would be great to know who is winning. Aunt Mary I will always miss you. Peace and Love

Mary Anderson was the mother of my dearest and longest friend, Jean. Jean and I met at Merrimack College our freshman year. We had a shared sense of adventure for life. I was a frequent visitor to the Anderson home during those years. I was amazed at the activity of the home, the large family and numerous friends in and out. More so, that Mary handled the chaos with humor, hospitality and made a point to know each friend that visited.
On one spring break, Jean and I had clandestine adventure to Washington DC in the making. Without making the plan or destination particularly clear to anyone; jean and I were heading to the capitol in a day. Prior to leaving , I found myself out on errands with Mary and Jean. We stopped at Holsteins. Jean was sent into the deli and I was left in the car with Mary, alone. Mary ceased the opportunity to quiz me on our intentions with pointed questions that I tried to respond to. I was hoping my story corroborated with Jeans. It was one of the longest 5 minutes I have ever endured.
Jean and I made it to DC but in less that 24 hours our location was identified and we were summoned back to New Jersey. This was serious sleuthing for the time. It was before GPS and cell phones. Mary was not to be messed with.
Later in life, I had the opportunity to go on another Anderson adventure. This time with Mary. Jean, Mary and I took a trip to Asheville NC to see the mountains and the Biltmore Estate. Mary was a delightful travel companion. The three of us had a great time that I still treasure today.
Mary was an extraordinary person. When I got married, she knitted a beautiful Irish cable afghan. I still have that afghan; it is very special to me.
When I had my first child, Mary sent me a hand knitted Babar, the elephant along with the Babar storybook to read to my daughter.
On other less happy occasions Mary would send a kind notes or have a mass said in memory. She was a special person who I will always admire. She was thoughtful and sincere beyond the average person. I consider myself lucky to have known her. Jean is my life long friend and her mother was the bonus in that she too was my friend.
Mary built an amazing family. I admired how they came together to support their mother in all ways possible. I know she was very proud of you. You all were there for her and that is the greatest love. My heart goes out to all the family at this sad time. You are in my thoughts and prayers. With love, Phoebe

Mary Boyce Anderson and my mother, Mary Smith Perry, were first cousins. Their mothers, Rose Rath Boyce and Kitty Rath Smith, were sisters. Rose and Kitty were close and shared many happy times together, as well the sad times. They were always there for one another. Rose and Kitty’s children grew up in a wonderful, supportive family. Their grandchildren all knew one another and spent many summers at the Jersey shore - summers that will never be forgotten.
My mother’s cousin, Mary Boyce Anderson, made an impression on all who were lucky enough to know her.
I send my deepest condolences to her husband, Jack and to all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary’s was a life well lived. She leaves a legacy of love, generosity and strength. She will Rest In Peace always.

It's hard to choose a single memory of Aunt Mary. Two memories compete and I'll share both. You can decide which might be more her.
Is it the Skol, cigarettes, savage tan, teaching me to knit, and being the totally cool Aunt who was 19 years my senior? I've got to say, it was great when it was happening and great as a memory.
Or, was it the honor she payed me by attending an Ethics lecture I gave? The lecture was in Australia. I went a week ahead of her arrival in order to prepare. After we toured Australia, we were off to New Zealand and an immersion into the culture of the Maori People. She was a trooper as a world traveler! This was one of many exciting vacations she took on many continents.
Tough to choose! Thanks for the memories Aunt Mary!
Rest in peace. Love and prayers, Anne Marie

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Anderson's passing. She was such an inspiring and amazing woman.
My family and I lived across the street from the Anderson's on Glenfield Road. I remember her driving us kids to school everyday, and driving my mom and I to church every Sunday and holy day. On school holidays she would plan day trips to fun and historical places. You were always welcome in her home!!! I also remember that she liked baseball and on any given summer day you could find her sitting in her chair knitting or doing some other project watching the game on TV with Suzette sitting under the chair. Lots of wonderful memories!
To the Anderson's, please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I know how very special she was to each of you.
Love to you all

When I was first introduced to Mrs. Anderson, I hugged her. Not an auspicious start. The last time I saw her, she didn't remember me. Thankfully, she didn't remember the hug either and said she liked me. Even though I didn't know her well, I know she made this world a better place by raising strong, funny, compassionate children, who took care of her until the end. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Aunt Mary is present in my earliest memories. Her spirit of adventure and her playfulness were evident to me as a very young child. Whenever I was traveling on the Garden State Parkway she always graciously extended an invitation to stay with her at her home. On several of those occasions she arranged for a ‘road trip’ to visit relatives with fascinating stories to share to add to my genealogical research. The best part was, she was as curious and enthusiastic about it as I was. It was so much fun!
It’s comforting to imagine the enthusiastic welcome she received when she returned home to God, right on time for her mother’s birthday. The canasta cards were being shuffled and the rules of the game were being hotly debated as the festivities got underway.
Rest In Peace Auntie. You will be missed.

Mary was an adored, well-loved child whose inner confidence shone with her family, friends, cub scouts, students, and neighbors throughout her life. Her Montclair childhood was filled with Lacordaire friends, riding ponies, and Locust point summers on the river with her parents, her brother Joe, and constant guests.
Encouraged to excel, Mary double-majored in biology and chemistry at her beloved College of New Rochelle. Mary often brought her loyal lifelong friends home to Waterbury Road or Locust Point for the weekends and holidays. Her Mom and Dad hosted popular Sunday festivities including a lively mix of young, old, Catholics and not, playing croquette in the back yard and canasta in the game room on the porch, with a martini or two and quality scotch.
Mary lit up a room with her natural beauty, encouraging smile, usually with a cigarette, and listened to each person like they were the only person in the world.
Mary's dream was a big family of children in a boisterous noisy house and she and her husband Jack raised seven to adulthood and beyond. Mary encouraged education and discovering talents to contribute and her children and their friends, and sometimes cousins, often piled into the station wagon for trips to historical site, art lessons, dance lessons, piano lessons, museums, sports, and the beach.
Mary created Christmases with flair – decorations, trees, Mass, custom presents for each child, and delicious dinners for twenty. Mary cooked and served dinner for ten each night but always had room for a friend or two at the table. To this day, her tuna noodle casserole with potato chips are a favorite dinner for those lucky friends. Who knew Mary first created it with leftover potato chips from her bridge game. LOL
Mary was an expert knitter and she gifted still treasured afghans, ponchos, sweaters, hats, scarves, stuffed animals, Christmas stockings, and mittens to lucky family and friends for special occasions and taught people to knit too.
Mary traveled joyfully, researching each world-wide location and sharing the local art, history, and faith with her children, her friends, and fellow travelers and promptly put a pin on her packed travel map of the world when she got home.
Mary's faith was profound - she loved to see the magnificent cathedrals and unique chapels. Mary often attended daily Mass and her strong faith sustained her through tough times and was celebrated in good times.
Mary touched many lives with her special light, caring, wit, intelligence and natural curiosity.
Mary fought bravely for her health first physically and then with Alzheimer’s, strong and brave throughout. Her spirit was especially radiant with the musical therapy with Danny encouraging Mary to sing and dance to the music.
Supported by her husband Jack of 69 years and her devoted youngest Eileen, with her dedicated team of Louie, Johnny, and Monica caring for, entertaining, and encouraging Mom every day in her final chapter here. Her west coast children Jean, Rosemary, and Paul were pitch hitters in residence when in NJ. Mom left a legacy of love as seen in the picture of her 70th birthday party with her family, friends, and fans.
Mary is off to her reward, joining her loving family welcoming her.
My heart is broken and I will miss her forever, but her light shines always in my heart.
May my many fantastic memories, small and large, eventually turn my sorrow into loving smiles.
I Love You Mom, Your Daughter, Jean Marie
