Our mother lived a beautiful life. It was a life of love and friendship. Those in her life that she loved and who loved her in return, gave her the greatest joy and sustained her in difficult times. She loved and needed people. She made friends where ever she went. We could not go into an elevator without coming out knowing a little bit about each person there. She would begin the conversations with a compliment. "You have beautiful eyes," or "Where did you get your shoes?" She made people feel good, even if she would never see them again.
The love our mother had for our father was a rare and "true" love, that we her daughters were privileged to witness. She never wavered in her love. Fourteen years after his death she still spoke to him each day and believed that he was looking after all of us.
She was a mother to her core. Her first concern was for her girls. Upon awakening from anesthesia following a most serious operation, she looked up and said, "Did you girls have your dinner?" I believe she fought so hard because she did not want to leave us.
She had friends for over 70 years, and always had new friends. Her mailman was her friend. Everyone who knew her, loved her! As the Irish say, "She was GRAND ALTOGETHER!!!
Rest dear one. You so deserve it!

Colleen, Bonnie, Robin and your families - I remember your mom when we were all growing up and you were spending summers at the lake. Your mom and mine would have coffee together or talk in the street when keeping an eye on all of us. I'm so sorry for your loss and will keep her in my prayers.

Jean Egan Byrne grew up in West Orange, NJ. She was the only daughter to Peggy and Joseph Egan. She had 3 brothers. Two older; Joey and Tommy and one younger; Billy. Jean was fond of telling stories of her famiiy and her life growing up spending summers at Lake Hopatcong.
Jean met the man of her dreams, Joe Byrne, also of West Orange, and knew the minute she met him that he was going to be her husband. Jean and Joe had 3 daughters, Colleen, Bonnie, and Robin whom they adored. There are 6 grandchildren; Erin Carrington Smith, Michael Carrington, Sean O'Leary, Shannon O'Leary, Kevin O'Leary, and Ryan Byrne. And now 2 great-grandchildren; David Carrington and Sally Hannah Carrington Smith. Jean (aka Mema) was truly a hero to the children. The grandchildren would call her daily to tell her what they were doing, or on occassion tell what their parents were or were not doing correctly. No matter what she was doing if one of the grandchildren called she would stop and take the time to talk and see what they needed.
To say Jean was proud of her family is an understatement. She always made everyone around her feel special and well loved. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and found joy in being with people. She has friends from childhood, and new friends that she has recently met since moving "down the shore."
Jean's catholic faith was very important to her. She never missed a Sunday mass, and went to daily mass during lent for years. She said the rosary everyday. Faith is one of the more valuable gifts she gave to her children. She respected their way of expresseing faith sometimes in ways different from her own, with as much understanding as she could find. However, it was well known that she prays for us daily to "see the light." It is well known because she made sure she told us almost daily! :)
When Jean was diagnosed with cancer it seemed like she did not even blink. Her questions to the doctors were "what do we do and when do we start." When she was told she would have a life changing surgery she went into NYC and "did what needed to be done." She spent weeks in the hospital recovering and then weeks in rehab. After only a few months the cancer was back. Again it seemed like she did not blink and said "what's next." She went on to several rounds of chemo and then when that did not work she received radiation therapy. She was determined! She even fought the pain by trying her best to deny that it existed, and refused, most days, to take the pain medicine. She got up each day got dressed and went and sat in her chair. I don't know many people that would have had the strength to keep going, but she did. Right up to the very end when she FINALLY agreed to take the pain medicine and stay in bed. While the pain at times was unbearable she was able to sing a song to her daughter, and do fashion consults from her bed.
Jean's strength, grace, faith, and love will be gifts her family will need to go forward finding comfort in knowing she is at peace!

Cancer never wins! My mother fought hard and long, and she is now at peace! The cancer took over her body, but it never had a chance with her spirit! Her strength and her grace will always be alive in the many family, friends, and even strangers that crossed her path! I miss you mom! Love, Bonnie
