Randolph Llewelyn Sampson, MD
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted. Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2.
Dr. Randolph Llewelyn Sampson was born in Georgetown, Guyana, on May 12, 1927 to the late Captain James Sampson and Rebecca Taitt. He was the seventh of nine children, all of whom preceded him in death.
Initially, he was a teacher in Guyana and then he changed his profession and became a seaman which enabled him to migrate to the United States of America. He attended Howard University, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in May 1958, and then married his beautiful and loving wife, Inez, on June 7, 1958. Randolph then migrated to Germany to pursue his medical studies and graduated from Graz University Medical School in 1970 with his doctorate in medicine. He then returned to the United States and in 1978 completed his residency in anesthesiology in Newark, New Jersey, at Newark's Beth Israel Hospital.
Dr. Sampson worked for several medical institutions in the New York metropolitan area before being employed by Maimonides Medical Center from 1978 - 2000 as an Anesthesiologist. He then changed jobs and was employed from 2000 - 2012 by St. Joseph's Medical Center Yonkers, NY. Dr. Sampson received his Licenses from the States of New York, New Jersey and Maine. He also belonged to numerous medical societies such as the Medical Society, State of New York; New York State Society of Anesthesia; Maimonides Medical Center Alumni Association; American Society of Anesthesiology, and the International American Research Society. Dr. Sampson was an ardent supporter of the Guyana Nurses Association in Brooklyn, New York, and made financial contributions to their Scholarship Fund from 1985 - 2012. He also established the Randolph L. Sampson Scholarship Fund in honor of his mother, Rebecca Taitt, at the Georgetown Hospital in Georgetown, Guyana, and in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
On February 7, 2014, Dr. Sampson departed this life quite peacefully to be with the Lord. He is survived by his wife Inez, three children, Noel Denney, Kenneth Sampson (Renea) and Erwin Sampson (Sherri) three grandchildren, Victoria, Christopher and Grace, five nephews, ten nieces, several great nephews and great nieces and a host of other loving relatives and friends. His warmth, charisma, energy and commitment will be missed by all of those who were blessed to be in his presence.
