Kevin will be gone from us one year on 12/31/13. His sense of humor, his laughter, his smiling eyes are missed. There is a void in our lives because he was taken from us way too soon. And it has been difficult dealing with this loss. He is thought about each and every day since he's been gone. He will never be forgotten!

Our deepest condolences to Peggy and the entire McGrath Family. We have wonderful memories of Kevin as a Montclair Blues hockey dad, during which we would stand shivering at some cold rink cheering on Kevin, Brian, our Teddy and the boys. We will miss seeing Kevin jogging up and down Park Street in his bright red jacket. He was a decent man and a great father to his family, and we will always remember him.

Deep personal condolences to Peggy and the entire McGrath family. I was a very close friend of Kevin's back during grammar school in lower Manhattan. I will always remember him as a kind person and great personal friend. He always was a giving person, rich in spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Kevin and I shared friendship, fun and laughs through 8 years of St. James School in lower Manhattan (1959-1967). With our sidekick, Jimmy Hearon, the three of us were inseparable back then. From hanging out at Cherry Street Park to going to Manhattan Beach in the summer (Kevin's older sister Maureen and her friends Irene Kubis and Angela would sometimes go with us). Kevin used to call Irene "mini Zuma" as that was the last name of Irene's boyfriend at the time.
Kevin, myself and other kids from the neighborhood would play a lot of pickup games of basketball, baseball and football over the years. Kevin was a naturally gifted athlete and had a wonderful sense of humor. He had a wonderful gift of keeping us all entertained with his quick wit.
One of his nicknames back as a kid was "Eggy". We all had nicknames back then. That nickname originated at the beginning of one summer vacation from parochial school when the start to the summer was always centered around getting a new pair of sneakers and short haircut. Well, one year, Kevin got a particularly short haircut and Jimmy and I nicknamed him Eggy! Back around 1965 I used to call him "Mudcat" after a pitcher with that nickname as Kev would pitch with the same windup as major league pitcher Jim "Mudcat" Grant. Kevin would tap the pitchers mound as part of his windup and he would acknowledge this nickname by mentioning that he had to "tap the rubber" before throwing a pitch past me in my futile attempt to hit it.
Around this same time period, summer of 1965, Kevin and I went to the NY Worlds Fair. His quick wit was in evidence when we had visited the Illinois Pavilion there. One of the attendants at that Pavilion saw us with our baseball caps on (Kev with his SF Giants hat and me with my Mets cap) and she mentioned that she was engaged to a baseball pitcher, Cal Koonce, who, at the time was a member of the Chicago Cubs. Kev said to her, "He stinks!". Hey, he wasn't a Giants player so Kev was just speaking his mind! Pure Kevin! Never malicious but very honest.
He and I spent a few months together in High School (Seward Park High) before my family moved to Brooklyn. We did keep in touch for a short while and we went to the Mets home opener at Shea Stadium in April of 1968. He was a rabid Giants fan and they were playing the Mets. That game was memorable as it was the first time that the Mets ever won a home opener.
Little did I realize that as I headed back to Brooklyn and Kev and some of the other guys that went to the game continued their subway journey back to the lower east side that it would be the last time we got to hang out together. It is amazing how the very best of being childhood friends somehow become separated by families moving away or by meeting new friends in High School.
Earlier this evening, I had gotten the word from Jimmy Hearon about Kevin's passing. It was a shock to both of us. For us kids growing up in a poor part of town we always had a lot of spirit and good outlook on life. Growing up back then I guess we felt immortal as most kids do I guess. We had a lot of spirit and good times together. Despite the separation of a lot of years I will always remember "Eggy" and hanging out at Cherry Street Park or the East River Park on the bsseball diamonds there.
My condolences to Kevin's family. I will always remember him as a wonderful giving person way back when. He will always be remembered by me.
Sincerely,
Bill Priester
