Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William Gabriel Mallon II, “Bill”, 75 Of Charleston SC, passed away at his home on Daniel Island Tuesday October 31, 2023, surrounded by family and friends.

Bill was born on August 31,1948 in his beloved town of Montclair NJ.   He was the son of Edward Mallon and Anne McGeorge Mallon.

He attended Edgemont Elementary School, St Benedicts Prep School in Newark N.J., and matriculated to Boston College where he was a political science major and received his J.D. from the Fordham University School of Law.

Bill brought his academic and legal talents to the banking world. During a forty-year career in commercial banking he worked at Chemical Bank (promoted to Managing Director at the age of 36), Mellon Bank (Penna), Shawmut Bank and Fleet Boston Bank (Boston Ma).

He was a member of the Board of Directors at Chemical Bank and Mellon Bank, of the Executive Committee at Mellon and the Management Forum at Shawmut, where he was the Chief Credit Officer. He was one of the first four co-founders of New Star Financial Inc in 2003 and helped take it public in 2006 where it traded on the NASDAQ.

In his lifetime Bill was active in civic affairs.  He was an Assistant Scoutmaster in The Boy Scouts of America, and being a young Eagle Scout himself, it was one of his proudest accomplishments. He was president of Parish Council of his original parish Church, Immaculate Conception, in Montclair NJ.  He was also on the Board of Directors of the New Community Foundation in Newark N.J for 10 years, and Treasurer and Finance Chairman of Emerson Hospital (Concord Ma) for 7 years.

Before his Illness he was a devoted volunteer at the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Mt Pleasant S.C.  As a devout Catholic he was a founding member of the Catholic Good Shepherd Club, where he diligently worked as the treasurer, to help establish a Catholic Church on Daniel Island.

Bill declared that he lived in the 4 best towns in the world, Montclair NJ, Concord MA, Charleston SC, and Nantucket MA. He found his passions in every town. He was a lover of nature and conservation and blessed to have a home on his cherished Nantucket where he was a loyal supporter of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Books were his obsession, and he could never pass by an old bookstore or library. He was very well read, and he could read, understand, and retain like no other. Bill enjoyed and studied all the arts; music, artwork, museums, and fine antiques were his loves. Bill could talk to anyone about anything.  He was engaging, interesting and his constant smile was contagious. When he shook your hand, you felt it.

Bill and Betsy were both widowed and they were married at Stella Maris Catholic Church on Sullivans Island in 2006. They were active members of St Clare of Assisi Parish, the Daniel Island Club and Daniel Island Community which became his second family.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mary McDonough Mallon, his sisters Margaret Grace, Mary Flate (Ray), Caroline Harris (George).

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Betsy Sarsfield, his siblings Edward A Mallon, Katherine M Johnson (Zachary), James C Mallon (Gina), his children William G Mallon III (Adrienne), James E Mallon (Alicia), Kathryn “Casey” Lebel (Bryan) and his stepchildren Haley Harton (Will), Brynne Sarsfield (Dylan), and 9 loving Grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 990 Etiwan Park Street, Daniel Island SC.

Interment will be at St Mary’s cemetery on Nantucket Island, at a later date.
