I have lots of fun and fond memories of Gerry over the years. We worked together in the Toms River bureau of the Asbury Park Press and our desks were right near each other..along with Gary Rothbart.., in the back portion of the bureau. Fred Simmonds, the bureau chief, was always coming back there and telling us he was going to separate us because we were talking and laughing so much! I also remember some parties at the house he shared with Wally at the Jersey Shore. Some of my later memories were the car rides we took from Hoboken/NYC down to the shore to go to... yes..the memorial services of Tom Jobson and Joe Adelizzi..and Press gatherings. I would take a train or ferry over to Hoboken or Newark to meet Gerry and/or Stela and we would head down in his car. And he would always, always insist on driving me right back to my doorstep at my apartment building on the East side of Manhattan near the United Nations. A true gentleman. Always gracious and generous and fun! I miss you!

I will always remember the wonderful visit Gerry and Stela made to Italy, when we spent time together in Rome. It was a confirmation of what a highly educated and culturally curious man Gerry was, what a loving relationship him and Stela built together and how they enjoyed discovering the world together and with lucky friends such as me. I am sure Gerry wants us to continue learning and exploring and loving as he always did, and although we will miss him - we will honor his wish.

Another bright light gone from our lives. George "Gerry" Campion was a smart, funny, incredibly nice and egoless man who was pure class.
We were originally reporters together back in what seems like the Stone Age (1980s) he for the Asbury Park Press and me for the Bergen Record, both stationed at the U.S. District Court press room in Newark. Gerry, who went to Fordham undergrad, had two highly accomplished older brothers along with his sister, Tom, who was a major legal player in New Jersey, and Robert, a psychiatrist, and he idolized both and wanted to be lawyer himself. So after I began night law school while at The Record, he decided ( I gave a little encouragement) that he could do it as well (and actually did it much better than I) even in his 40s. He also enrolled at Seton Hall Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude and on the law review. While at school he worked part-time for me as a legal reporter when I became editor of the New Jersey Law Journal, where we both worked for the legendarily brilliant and volatile Steve Brill, who owned American Lawyer Media.
Gerry was generally fairly reserved, but had this magnetic grin and, like Jerry Seinfeld, had a hard time keeping a straight face when he was about to say something funny. One of my best memories was taking him out of his element to an extreme when we went to Club Med Cancun together in the 90s. I can just see, through a drunken haze, dear Gerry and I dancing wildly on the bar and tables at Senor Frogs and laughing like crazy.
Gerry loved the law and loved being a lawyer. He practiced at several firms, most notably with Tompkins McGuire in Newark (he even worked at my firm for a while). He could drill down into a case like the best of them. He would also keep track of every case I appeared in with a decision, and he'd send me emails with a comment or a nice word each time he read about me. I didn't deserve such a wonderful friend.
But the happiest I've ever seen Gerry was on his wedding day when he met the equally classy and very beautiful Stela Maria - whom he described as his angel, and whom he married in his late 50s. He was so over the moon about Stela. And she made him feel like a million bucks. They lived in a nice apartment right off Frank Sinatra Drive in Hoboken, where she recently nursed him through till the end with this horrid disease. She is indeed a special person and they were so lucky to have each other.
I will miss Gerry, and I know there are a lot of you out there who will miss him as well. I wish I had a better picture handy but this was Gerry's lawyer picture, something that was important to this understated guy who listened to others before he interjected and made everyone around him feel important. Godspeed my friend.

Uncle Gerry is loved so very much by his nieces and nephews. I was fortunate enough to live in the same house with Gerry while he went to law school. I was inspired by his dedication to his studies, enjoyed the study breaks to play video games, and loved our long talks at random times. Through this formative time in my life, he inspired me to to fully commit myself to my studies when I later went to law school. Gerry always showed such generosity and kindness to me and all his nieces and nephews. He lives on through us.
