Obituary of James Andrew Murphy

James A Murphy On Saturday January 18, 2020, James Andrew Murphy passed away at the age of 81 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in East Orange, NJ. James was born on August 1, 1938 to Leonard and Elizabeth Murphy in Waterbury, CT. He was the youngest of 6. James attended Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, graduated from University of Connecticut where he played basketball, and received a masters degree from Catholic University in Ponce, Puerto Rico. James raised two sons, Kevin and Timothy, in Montclair, NJ. He is survived by his two sons and 5 grandchildren George, Sean, James, Ryan and Charlie. James spent the last 30 years of his life in Playa Santa, Puerto Rico, which is a small fishing village on the southwest corner of the island. He was very well known in Playa Santa and had a steady routine that included a daily swim, the New York Times crossword puzzle, and a beer in one of the town’s waterfront bars. James was an avid reader, a dedicated Giants fan, and enjoyed a good conversation with whomever was willing to engage with him. Services will be held Thursday January 23 at 10:00am at Saint Cassians Church in Upper Montclair, NJ.
