Obituary of Joseph A Maffongelli

Joseph Anthony Maffongelli, Jr. of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, was called to the Lord on October 3, 2018.

Born on November 3, 1944, the son of Joseph A. Maffongelli, Sr. MD and Joy (Viviano) Maffongelli , he attended Lacordaire Academy, St. Cassian Grammar School, St. Benedict”s Preparatory School and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Villanova University. After earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Seton Hall University in 1969, he joined the law firm of Judge Frank Brunetto and eventually took over the practice. Joseph was an Attorney at Law for almost fifty years, serving clients until the time of his death.

Preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Warren W. Umholtz, Joseph is survived by his sister, Joan M. Umholtz of Tewksbury (NJ); his brother, Ralph and wife Alice Maffongelli of Sheboygan (WI); his niece Lynne (Maffongelli) Christopher and husband Jim of Chicago (IL); great-niece and nephew Anna and Andrew Christopher; numerous cousins and his very special friend, Angel Cosgrove.

As a member of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey Bar Association Joseph was licensed to practice in New Jersey and New York. He was a member of the Montclair YMCA, the Bradford Bath and Tennis Club, the Mercier Club, served on the board of directors of the YMCA and Lacordaire Academy, and was active in St. Cassian Church (Upper Montclair).

Visitation will be at the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park Street, Montclair, Thursday, October 11, 4:30-8:30 p.m. and Friday, October 12, 8:30-9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Fr. Marc Vicari 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 12, at St. Cassian Church, 187 Bellevue Avenue, Upper Montclair.
