Lindley Squires, ITT Avionics Vice President, 85

Lindley Sturges Squires of Montclair passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at age 85.

Mr. Squires grew up in Rutland, Vermont, the son of attorney Lindley Sturges Squires, Sr. and Harriett Sophia (Ward). His childhood and school friends affectionately knew him as “Squeak.” He graduated from Middlebury College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he majored in Physics and Electrical Engineering, respectively. He was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity and was elected to engineering honor societies Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi. From 1948 – 1954 he served as a Sergeant in the National Guard, receiving honorable discharge.

He worked for 36 years at the ITT division in Nutley/Clifton named IT&T Federal Laboratories where he started as a Junior Engineer after college. Through the years he was promoted through the ranks to the level Vice President, with responsibilities for Program Management, Information Systems, and Operations when the company’s name had been changed to ITT Avionics. He retired in 1993. He also taught mathematics at New Jersey Institute of Technology (evening school) for a number of years.

Mr. Squires was also a jazz musician, playing trombone in The Dukes of Dixie jazz band in the 1950s. He was a member of the New Jersey Jazz Society since 1971 and a member of the Jazz Record Masters of North Jersey since 2007.

On his maternal side, Mr. Squires was a descendent of the Ward family, British colonists instrumental in establishing the independence of the United States. Throughout his adult years, he remained connected to his Ward roots as a historian, maintaining a genealogy database, publishing a family calendar, and participating in the annual Ward family reunions as photographer.

He was married to the former Edwina Rachels, a graduate of Caldwell College who achieved a career as a microbiologist at Hoffmann La Roche in Nutley. Together they traveled the world, having visited over 125 countries and territories on all continents.

Mr. Squires is survived by daughters Lorene H. Squires and Livia J. Squires from a previous marriage to Aurora Aloisi, a grandson Kenneth Andrew Squires-Kavanagh, and a number of cousins and their families.
