Obituary of Maureen Crowley


Sister Maureen Crowley 79, (formerly Sister Maureen William), a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died March 31, 2018 in Brick, NJ surrounded by her loving family.

The wake for Sister Maureen will be held at Immaculate Conception Church,30 N Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ on Wednesday, April 4th, 2018 from 4-8PM, The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Montclair at 10:30 AM on Thursday. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station, NJ.

Sister Maureen was born in Montclair, NJ, the daughter of William and Marion (Flynn) Crowley. She entered the Sisters of Charity on August 20, 1957 and served for 60 years.

Sister Maureen graduated Immaculate Conception elementary and high school and from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.A. degree in History. She then attained an M.A. degree in Administration and Supervision from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ. Sister Maureen spent her entire Catholic Education mission in New Jersey. She served as an Assistant Superintendent for the Archdiocese of Newark, a teacher at Sacred Heart School, Vailsburg and Our Lady Help of Christians School, East Orange. She then served as principal at Sacred Heart School, Bloomfield and went on to teach History at Marylawn of the Oranges South Orange. She was then a teacher, principal and first president of Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair until her retirement.

Sister Maureen served on the boards of St. Mary Hospital, Passaic, the College of St. Elizabeth and the Academy of Saint Elizabeth, both at Convent Station, NJ and was President Emerita for the Immaculate Conception High School Board.

She was pre-deceased by her beloved parents, Marion and Bill Crowley and her sister and dearest friend, Margaret (Peggy) Crowley.

She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her cousins Patricia Toris and Robert Bainbridge (Sharon) as well as many Flynn and Crowley cousins. She will be missed by her many loyal friends and former students, several of whom cared for her through her illness.

An avid sports fan, she cheered on Immaculate Lions, Notre Dame Football and whatever was the sport of any season. She played basketball in her early days at Immaculate Conception High School and golf in the latter days.
