Obituary of Edith Baum Finney

Please share a memory of Edith to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that the family of Edith “Edie” Baum Finney announces her passing in Montclair, NJ on Sunday, February 25th, 2018, at the age of 86 years old after a short illness. Born on Bastille Day, July 14, 1931, Edie married long-time Nantucket summer resident Howard Finney, III in 1963 and took on three young children as part of the packaged deal. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Edie lovingly raised the children as her own in addition to her two children with Howard that would come along later. Nothing was more important to Edie than her family.

All who knew Edie loved her and appreciated her sense of humor and pragmatism. She welcomed all into her home, including hundreds upon hundreds of young junior football players every fall for over 40 years that were part of the Montclair Cobra Football Association. No dinner was ever completed without phone calls or endless players trooping through the house which she took in stride. She also worked for many happy years for Ferguson & Gille law firm on Park Street in Montclair. Edie enjoyed over fifty summers at the family home on Nantucket with extended family and friends.

Edie will be lovingly remembered by her husband Howard Finney III; her daughter and husband Susan and Steve Lefave and their children Lily and Tyler of Herndon, VA; son Douglas Finney of Montclair, NJ; daughter Linda Finney Williams of Nantucket and her children Aryn Perryman of Adelaide, Australia, Evan Gerardi of Nantucket, and Colin and Meggan Williams and their children (Edie’s great-grandchildren) Gavyn, Isla and Eloise of Nantucket; son Howard “Jay” Finney, IV, his wife Jacqui Acevedo and their children Howard “Quint” Finney, V., Noelle Villa and Fernando Villa of Chelsea, MA; son Paul Finney of Nantucket and Palm Springs, CA; brother-in-law John Finney of Montclair and Nantucket; and, many nieces, nephews and their families. Edie was predeceased by her parents and siblings.

A memorial service for Edie will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 12:00 pm at Central Presbyterian Church, 46 Park St., Montclair, NJ followed by a reception in the Guild Room. A private interment will be held at 10:00 am at the family plot in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Montclair, NJ. A celebration of Edie’s life for family and friends will be held on Nantucket on July 14, 2018 at the family summer home at 36 Union Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edie’s name may be made to the Montclair Cobras Junior Program, 43 Virginia Ave., Montclair, NJ 07042 or at Montclaircobras.com.
