Obituary of John Joseph McManamey, Jr.

John Joseph McManamey Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at his home. 

John was born on August 19, 1924, to John and Agnes (Canning) McManamey, and grew up in West Paterson. He was the oldest of five children: brothers, Joseph, James, and Donald McManamey, and a sister, Bernice (McManamey) Devos, all of whom predeceased him. John attended Drew University on an academic scholarship prior to joining the Navy, where he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He worked as Electronic Technician at ITT in Nutley for 39 years, until he retired. He resided in Glen Ridge for 55 years with his wife Ruth (Kupferer) McManamey, who predeceased him in 2010. John and Ruth shared a love of the great outdoors. Whether it was climbing Mount Washington in New Hampshire, visiting Sand Beach in Maine’s Acadia National Park, or canoeing in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, they cherished summer vacations with their children and family dogs.

Those who knew him enjoyed John’s quick wit and sense of humor, relied on his wisdom and compassion, and appreciated his strong yet non-judgmental sense of right and wrong. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Calhoun, and her husband, Craig, and a son, John G. McManamey and his wife, Lisa, by six grandchildren whom he adored in turn was adored by: Shawna, Zachary, and Joshua Calhoun, and Meghan (McManamey) Fernandes and her husband Michael Fernandes, Brittany, and Cristina McManamey, and two great grandchildren, Zackary Fernandes and Colton John Fernandes.
