In all my years as a professional writer, I've always remembered my days as a student and work-study employee of Jim Conniff's, and have always tried to edit out anything that might have earned the dreaded marginal scrawl "RNF" (Read No Further) from this exacting taskmaster. I'm glad to have gotten back in touch with him in recent years, and pleased to have had him compliment me on any small success I may have had. That meant a lot.

I am one of countless writers who owe our a great debt to Prof. James C.G. Conniff, or just Conniff as he usually signed his notes. We didn't need J School, we had Conniff! A few friends and I have been reminiscing since hearing the news and all have fond memories. Very sorry for your loss.

This is an article my Dad wrote for the New York Times magazine about my brother Mark, who has Down syndrome, and about raising him at home when institutionalization was the more standard practice: http://strangebehaviors.wordpress.com/2013/06/10/family-business-manchild-coming-of-age/
