Obituary of Gayle Pumphrey

Gayle Massenburg Pumphrey, on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at her home in Caldwell. She was, until September 2005, a lifelong resident of Montclair. A memorial celebration will be held on Thursday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m., at Union Congregational Church on Cooper Avenue in Upper Montclair. Also on Thursday, June 18, the family will be receiving guests at Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home on 76 Park Street in Montclair between the hours of 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Mrs. Pumphrey was a belloved member of the Montclair community and a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She can be remembered for her work at the Union Congregational Church nursery school where she taught for 11 years. Gayle also worked for many years at Upper Montclair's Baby Boom and was a committed volunteer for Tony's Kitchen. She grew up on Tremont Place and graduated Montclair High School in the class of 1971 and attended Radford College in Radford, Virginia. Gayle was predeceased by her mother and step father, Lori and Bob Orr. She is survived by her loving family: her husband of 33 years, Jack (Jay) Pumphrey, Jr. and her daughters, Jaime Lynn and Jacqueline Gardner; her father, Judge Edgar A. Massenburg and his wife Patricia; her sister, Sheri Massenburg and her husband Michael Guscott; her brother Bob Orr and his wife Sharon; her sister Sally Hart; her sister Anne Harris; her brother Robert Harris and his wife Trisha; parents-in-law Norma Pumphrey and the late Jack Pumphrey, Sr.; sisters in-law Janet Pumphrey, Meg Wycoff and her husband John; nieces and nephews, Holly Rabbitt, Ashley and John Wycoff, Megan and Ryan Orr, Taylor Hart, Harry and Miller Bowron; Josh, Halle and Anne Harris.
