Montclair, New Jersey
Monday afternoon, Peter Johnson passed away surrounded by his family. A beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, and father, Peter was a rock and friend to everyone he met. He is survived by his beloved wife Caroline and his three daughters, Victoria, Vanessa, and Abigail.
Peter was born to James Barry and Barbara Johnson June 2, 1960. Peter was the third child and second son to the family. He has two older siblings, James and Janet [Vince] Smith (née Johnson), and two younger, Andrew [Maureen] and Edward [Mary]. He has 11 nephews and nieces who could always count on Uncle Pete for a fun story about his childhood with his siblings or some kind of Tastykake.
Peter was the one called for everything, from the smallest issue with the TV to a leak into the dining room, and every time he came in with a joke or 12. His favorite saying, "Let me drop everything and take care of your problem," was always thrown around, but he would do just that in a heartbeat for those he loves.
After a short stint at Paul VI Catholic High School, Peter transferred and graduated from Montclair High School in 1977. He went on to Seton Hall University in South Orange where he gained a bachelors in accounting and met his wife of nearly 36 years. He and Caroline (née McGovern) married at Seton Hall's chapel on November 10, 1990.
The couple moved into the Oakview area of Bloomfield and welcomed their three daughters, Victoria and Vanessa (also known as "The Twins") and Abigail. The family recently moved into Upper Montclair, where Peter would be found standing in front of the townhome smoking and talking to anyone and everyone. He was affectionately referred to as "The Mayor" of the neighborhood with his loyal deputy, the family Golden Retrievers, Leo and then Cooper.
His love for animals, hard work, dedication, as well as his ability to see people for their hearts are qualities he instilled in his daughters.
Peter is preceded in death by his father, James Barry, and his eldest brother, James.
Peter was 66 years old.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Mass will be held at St. Cassian's Catholic Church in Upper Montclair on November 2nd at 11 AM, followed by a repast at Tierney's Tavern.
