Frederic Gunnison Calder Obituary (2015)

Frederic G. Calder, 90, of West Orange, formerly of Montclair, passed away peacefully on February 14. He was the youngest son of the late Alexander and Adelaide Calder. Born and raised in Montclair, he attended Montclair Academy, graduating from Deerfield Academy. He attended Dartmouth College before entering the army and later graduated from New York University with a B.A. in Psychology. He met and married his wife, the late Mary Calder, while working in New York City. They were married 40 years. He worked in personnel at Union Camp where his father was President/CEO, in documentary films at Knickerbocker productions, in advertising at Smith, Hagel & Knudsen and in retail sales at Bragg & Sons in Montclair. He volunteered on the boards of the Children's Placement Review Board and the Montclair-West Essex Guidance center. An avid golfer, he had a scratch handicap, won tournaments in New England, NJ and Florida, played with two Presidents of Panama while serving in the army, had six holes in one, and was a member of the Montclair Golf Club for 69 years. He enjoyed playing bridge, a good meal, theatre and music, traveling to Florida each winter and to California each summer to visit his beloved grandson. A kind and loving husband, father and friend, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary Calder. He was the brother of the late Alexander and Stanley Calder. He is survived by his three daughters, Nina Calder Frey and her husband Joseph, Amanda Holder and her husband Jeffrey, and Melanie Calder, as well as his grandson Alexander Holder, niece Christie Salomon and nephews Stan and Alexander "Sandy" Calder. A private service was held at the Cliffs at Eagle Rock. Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on March 27 at 3 PM at the Montclair Golf Club.
