Walter T. Coon, M.D.

 

Dr. Walter Coon, 86, of West Caldwell, NJ entered eternal life on June 23rd, 2017  

 

Dr. Walter Coon was born in Hoboken, NJ and attended St. Michael's High School in Union City, NJ and St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C. Following graduation, he completed a rotating internship in Rochester, NY. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army in Germany with the rank of captain from 1958 to 1961. Upon his return, Dr. Coon completed a pediatric residency at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. 

 

Dr. Coon was a partner with Notchview Pediatrics in Clifton, NJ for 45 years. He was a member of the medical staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, NJ; at Passaic General in Passaic, NJ; and at St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic, NJ.

 

Dr. Coon was a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at UMDNJ, a clinical professor of pediatrics at Seton Hall Graduate School of Medicine, a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Coon became board-certified as a pediatrician in 1964.

 

Dr. Coon was a member of the Passaic County Medical Society, the Medical Society of New Jersey and the Irish AmericanPediatric Society. He served as a town councilman in North Caldwell from 1972 to 1975.

 

Dr. Coon was a member of many Irish American organizations including AOH Division Nine, Montclair, NJ, which honored him as Irishman of the Year in 1994. He was a member of the Essex Fells Country Club for 30 years.

 

Dr. Coon is survived by his loving wife Frances (McHugh) and his devoted sister Joan Lustmann. He leaves behind four loving children, Kathleen, Michael (Sharon), Thomas (Carolyn), and Patrick; and two loving stepsons, Mark (Kim) and Stephen (Lauren). He was grandfather of seven grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren and was great-grandfather to one great-grandchild.

 

Dr. Coon was a true gentleman who was loved and respected by many. The children and families who he cared for in his practice brought him great joy.
